Coffee lovers around the world are well-acquainted with Colombia's reputation as one of the world's most iconic coffee-producing countries. Colombia is currently the world's third largest coffee producer , surpassed only by Brazil and Vietnam.
But what really makes Colombia unique in the coffee world is that the country focuses on quality over quantity . Unlike many other major coffee-producing nations, Colombia focuses almost exclusively on growing Arabica coffee , a bean variety known for its complex aroma, balanced acidity, and smooth flavor profile.
In fact, Colombia is the only major coffee-producing country that produces almost exclusively Arabica beans .

In Colombia, coffee is far more than an export product – it is a central part of the country's culture and identity .
The coffee industry employs around half a million coffee farmers and is the largest employer in rural areas. At the same time, more than 88% of all coffee produced is exported, making coffee one of the country's most important sources of income.
But the success of coffee in Colombia was not obvious from the beginning.
When coffee plants were first introduced to the country in the mid-16th century, many farmers were hesitant to plant them. The reason was simple – it could take up to five years before the first harvest .
The story of how coffee took hold in Colombia is both unique and fascinating.
A priest in a small village had the idea to replace the traditional penance after confession with something more practical. Instead of reciting prayers, he asked his parishioners to plant three to four coffee plants .
The idea spread quickly.
Shortly thereafter, the Archbishop of Colombia ordered all priests to perform the same penance. As a result, coffee planting quickly spread across the country, laying the foundation for the Colombian coffee industry .
Colombian coffee has long been known for its high quality and distinct flavor profile . But what exactly makes it so special?
Colombia offers almost perfect conditions for coffee cultivation.
The country is located near the equator and has:
high mountains
heavy rainfall
fertile soil
a warm and humid climate
Coffee is often grown at high altitudes , which means that the coffee berries ripen more slowly. The slow ripening process develops more complex flavors in the beans.
In addition, Arabica is grown almost exclusively, which gives a softer and more nuanced flavor compared to Robusta which is often used in cheaper coffee.
When tasting Colombian coffee, you are often greeted with a balanced cup with medium acidity and a lively aroma .
Common flavor notes can be:
floral citrus notes
tropical fruits
red berries
chocolate
caramel sweetness
sometimes light spicy notes
The balanced profile means that Colombian coffee works excellently both as espresso and filter coffee .
There are around 22 coffee growing regions in Colombia , which are usually divided into three main zones.
Here the climate is warmer and the plantations are at a lower altitude. The coffee therefore gets:
lower acidity
high fullness
rounder taste
Closer to the equator and at higher altitudes, coffee is grown with:
clearer acid
more pronounced sweetness
fruitier flavor profile
The central region around Medellín is often called the Colombian coffee-growing axis and extends over almost 14,000 square kilometers .
Coffee from this region is often characterized by:
rich taste
plump body
clear acid
If you are curious about trying coffee from Colombia, we highly recommend Las Guzmanias .
The coffee is grown on the slopes of the central mountain range where the coffee plants grow in the shade of bamboo and banana trees . This natural shade cultivation helps the coffee berries ripen more slowly and develop a more complex flavor profile.
The daily operations are managed by Fernando Gomez Chica , who has worked for more than 20 years to improve both quality and productivity on the farm.
Over the years, he has implemented several projects to further improve quality, including:
improved cleaning and maintenance of machines
training pickers on how to select the ripest coffee cherries
careful sorting and processing
The result is a coffee with a pure taste, clear character and high quality in every cup .
