AA Rung'eto – Fruity specialty coffee from Kirinyaga in Kenya (SL28 & SL34)

AA Rung'eto from Karimikui, Kenya – A masterpiece from the slopes of Mount Kenya

A coffee with roots in tradition and precision

On the fertile slopes of Mount Kenya, where mist sweeps over rows of coffee plants and the red volcanic soil pulses with nutrients, we find the Karimikui Washing Station – the heart of this exceptional coffee.

The station is run by the Rung'eto Farmers Cooperative Society, a cooperative of over 1,000 small-scale coffee farmers. Each farmer works with small plots of an average of 0.5 hectares – a size that allows for an almost artisanal focus on quality.

Terroir: Altitude, soil and climate in perfect harmony

Karimikui is located in the Kirinyaga region at an altitude of around 1650 metres, creating ideal conditions for slow ripening – a key factor for complex flavour development.

What makes the area unique:

  • Nutrient-rich volcanic soil
  • Stable climate with clear rainy periods
  • High altitudes yield denser beans and higher quality

This is also where the classic Kenyan varieties SL28 and SL34 thrive – varieties known for their intense fruitiness and lively acidity.

The process behind the taste – precision in every step

This coffee is washed process, which means that every step in the processing is crucial.

Here's how it works:

  1. Handpicking – only ripe cherries are selected
  2. Sorting – defective berries are removed
  3. Overnight fermentation – develops complexity
  4. Washing in clean water
  5. Sun drying for 8–14 days

The Rungeto cooperative also works actively with sustainability, including through:

  • Water recycling
  • Optimized fermentation methods
  • Quality-driven production
