Solis & Cordero is a family-run project led by experienced producer Iván Gerardo Solís Rivera and his wife Leandra Cordero. Here is our first F1 hybrid and it is incredibly tasty!

After more than 20 years of experience in coffee cultivation, processing and quality control, Iván established Beneficio Santa Fe in 2018 to process his own coffee and provide services to smallholder farmers in the Santos region. The family operates several farms – including Finca Santa Maria, Cuatro Vientos (1,650 m above sea level, 6 hectares) and Finca Voo – and focuses on the cultivation of Catuai and Caturra at high altitudes. Their portfolio ranges from traditional and natural honeys to experimental fermentation methods (anaerobic processes of 72-92 hours, extended fermentation periods up to 144 hours and cinnamon infusions), developed in collaboration with CormaCafe (Brazil) through their Selvatech fermentation operations. This blend of tradition, family commitment and innovative processing makes Solis & Cordero a key name in Costa Rican specialty coffee. Finca Cuatro Vientos is a 6-hectare farm located at 1,650 meters altitude in Santa Maria de Dota, Tarrazú, owned and operated by Solsiré Solís Cordero, daughter of Iván and Leandra. The farm represents the next generation of the Solis & Cordero family project and reflects their commitment to producing and processing exceptional coffee while supporting other smallholder farmers in Costa Rica through shared knowledge, innovation and infrastructure.

What are F1 hybrids – and why they are important

An F1 hybrid is the first generation of a cross between two genetically distinct parents. These plants combine the best traits from both lines and exhibit what is known as hybrid vigor (heterosis) – faster growth, higher yields and greater resistance to environmental stress. These hybrids can outperform conventional varieties in almost every way. They produce more berries, show improved tolerance to diseases such as leaf rust and remain adaptable to different growing conditions. Crucially, they also maintain high cup quality. Previous breeding programs often involved trade-offs at the expense of flavor, or high yields at the expense of quality. F1 hybrids are designed to eliminate these trade-offs – to deliver both productivity and quality in a single plant.
