This coffee grows on an extinct volcano!

Legend has it that during a famine centuries ago, tribes migrated east and stumbled upon a river that proved their salvation. They named it “Sironko”, meaning “comfort” and “peace” in the Lumasaba language, spoken by the ethnic locals on the slopes of Mount Elgon. The washing station is located in Budadiri subcounty near the famous river and processes coffee cherries from the surrounding communities, still sustained by this abundant water source.

An extinct volcano on the border with Kenya, Mt Elgon is believed to be the oldest volcano on the African continent. Its massive base and gentle slopes support thousands of smallholder farmers, with Arabica coffee grown across a wide band around the mountain up to 2200m above sea level. Volcanic soils, abundant rainfall, high altitude and abundant sunshine all contribute to the excellent terroir of the Mt Elgon region and the subsequent exceptional cup quality.

Selectively hand-picked berries arrive at the Sironko washing station where they are subjected to quality and weight tests. Automatic flotation separates the cherries by density into 3 quality classes, with the densest cherries representing the highest quality. The selected berries are slowly dried in the sun on raised African beds, during which they are gently turned to ensure consistent drying and prevent over-fermentation. Once an optimum moisture content of around 12% has been achieved, the dried cherries are rested before secondary processing (peeling, sorting, grading)

The team at Sironko also runs programmes to empower women and youth; organize workshops that address attitude changes on resource ownership, acquisition and family participation, and create farmer savings and loan groups to encourage long-term economic stability in the community.
