When you think of Kenyan coffee, you often think of classics like SL28 and SL34. But there is another major player on the Kenyan coffee scene that has played a crucial role for the country’s coffee farmers over the past few decades: Ruiru 11 .
Developed as a direct response to devastating plant diseases, Ruiru 11 combines high resilience with an impressive flavor profile that surprises many specialty coffee drinkers.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Kenya was hit hard by Coffee Berry Disease (CBD) and Coffee Leaf Rust (CLR). The diseases wiped out large parts of the harvest and created a deep crisis for the livelihoods of local growers.
To address the crisis , the Coffee Research Station (CRS) in Ruiru embarked on an intensive breeding program. The goal was to create a hybrid that was fully resistant to both CBD and CLR, while maintaining the high cup quality for which Kenyan coffee is world-renowned.
In 1985, Ruiru 11 was finally launched. The name is a combination of the place where it was developed (Ruiru) and the code number for the specific coffee clone.
Ruiru 11 is not a simple cross between two varieties, but a so-called F1 hybrid with an extremely broad genetic heritage:
Compact growth habit: Unlike the tall SL bushes, Ruiru 11 is a dwarf bush. This allows farmers to plant almost twice as many bushes per hectare.
Resistance: Through careful breeding, the plant carries genes from, among others, Catimor (for disease resistance), K7 , SL28 , SL34 , Bourbon and Sudan Rume (for taste and quality).
Hand pollination: Since it is an F1 hybrid, manual pollination is required to produce the seeds, which makes the planting material itself more labor-intensive to produce for nurseries.
Historically, hybrids with Catimor heritage have had a reputation for tasting less complex than pure Arabica coffees. However, thanks to the strong genetics from SL28, SL34 and Sudan Rume, the high-quality Ruiru 11 delivers a fantastic taste experience:
| Property | Description |
| Sourness | Fresh and balanced citrus acid (like grapefruit or lemon). |
| Fertility | Notes of stone fruit, black currant and red berries. |
| Body & Sweetness | Medium-full body with clean and pleasant caramel sweetness. |
When grown at high altitude and refined with care, Ruiru 11 can maintain an extremely high quality and proudly compete with traditional varieties on the cupping table.
For the coffee lover, Ruiru 11 means a cup that balances the classic Kenyan vibrancy with a slightly softer and more accessible profile:
Roasting with precision: The beans are compact and require a well-balanced roast profile to open up their floral and fruity nuances without losing their natural sweetness.
Sustainable coffee production: When you drink Ruiru 11, you are drinking coffee from bushes that have required significantly less chemical pesticides. It is a safer choice for both the environment and the farmer's finances.
Ruiru 11 is a symbol of scientific innovation in the coffee world. It shows that it is possible to combine sustainability and disease resistance with a truly great cup of coffee. The next time you see a Kenyan lottery ticket featuring Ruiru 11 – don’t hesitate to give it a try!
