Origin and history: Named after Kenya's highest peak

Batian was developed by the Coffee Research Institute (CRI) in Kenya (formerly the Coffee Research Station) and was officially released to coffee farmers in 2010 .

The variety was proudly named after Batian , the highest peak on Mount Kenya. The name itself was a clear signal of the scientists' high ambitions: to create a coffee variety that reaches the absolute top levels in terms of both taste and cultivation characteristics.

The aim of the breeding work was to provide farmers with an alternative to Ruiru 11 that did not require the cumbersome hand pollination for seed production, but which at the same time offered complete protection against Coffee Berry Disease (CBD) and Coffee Leaf Rust (CLR).

Botany and Genetics: The Best from Five Coffee Worlds

Batian is a so-called advanced hybrid (or composite variety) produced through a complex crossing of five well-known varieties:

• SL28 & SL34: Contributes the classic, complex Kenyan flavor profile and high acidity.

• Ruiru 11: Provides genes for resistance to both coffee berry disease and leaf rust.

• K7 & N39: Contributes to additional disease resistance and adaptability.

Easier cultivation for farmers

Unlike Ruiru 11, which is a dwarf shrub, Batian is a tall tree with a large crown (similar to SL28 and SL34). This makes it a perfect fit for traditional Kenyan coffee plantations. It also bears fruit much faster than many other varieties – farmers can harvest their first berries after just 2 years instead of the normal 3-4 years.

The most revolutionary thing about Batian is that you as a coffee drinker don't have to compromise between durability and taste. In cupping tests, Batian regularly manages to achieve the same high scores as the iconic SL28.
