We've talked about the classic red mother, the sunshine in the yellow bean, and the Ethiopian mystery behind the pink. Now we've come to the last, and perhaps most elusive, color of the series: Orange Bourbon .
If you see a coffee called Orange Bourbon on the shelf, you should take note. This is one of the rarest and most sought-after varieties in the specialty coffee world. It is a bean that offers a completely unique flavor journey, and which requires an enormous amount of craftsmanship from the coffee farmer to even end up in your cup. Let's take a closer look at what makes the orange bean so spectacular.

Orange Bourbon is not a laboratory-produced hybrid, but a completely natural anomaly. It occurs when Red Bourbon and Yellow Bourbon is grown close together and cross-fertilizes naturally in the coffee fields.
When coffee farmers in Central and South America (especially in countries like El Salvador and Guatemala) began planting yellow and red coffee alternately, something magical happened. Nature mixed the colors, and the result was berries with a beautiful, deep orange hue.
Because it is a natural cross between two of the world's most flavorful coffees, the flavor profile is often described as "the best of both worlds":
Balanced texture: It inherits the full, creamy and round body from Red Bourbon.
Complex fruit acidity: It gets the lively, crisp and juicy acidity from Yellow Bourbon.
Tasting notes: In the cup, Orange Bourbon often offers a distinct sweetness of cane sugar and maple syrup, accompanied by complex notes of mandarin, orange peel, dried apricot and black currant.
If Orange Bourbon is so amazing, why isn't it grown everywhere? The answer lies in the biology and the extreme craftsmanship required during harvesting.
First, the orange color is genetically unstable. If a coffee farmer plants seeds from an Orange Bourbon tree, there is no guarantee that the next generation of trees will also bear orange berries – they often tend to revert to being either completely red or completely yellow.
Secondly, it requires immense patience during the harvest. As with Yellow Bourbon, it is a challenge for coffee pickers to see exactly when the berries have reached their perfect ripeness. Separating a subpar yellow-orange berry from a perfectly ripe, sugar-studded dark orange berry requires years of experience.
In order to sell the coffee as a pure "Orange Bourbon," the farmer must also go through his fields, identify exactly which individual trees are producing orange berries, and completely separate that crop from the rest of the farm during processing and drying. It's a time-consuming micromanagement exercise that only the most passionate specialty coffee farmers undertake.

According to market analysis from Perfect Daily Grind The demand for unique microlots is increasing exponentially. Today's coffee lovers are constantly looking for new, exciting flavor experiences, and Orange Bourbon fits that profile perfectly.
Because the variety is so rare, it often appears in very limited quantities. For coffee farmers, this means they can get a significantly higher price for their coffee, making the laborious work of insulating the trees economically viable.
Here at Hälla Kafferosteri we love coffee that tells a story, and Orange Bourbon is the perfect example of nature's own playfulness. It's a coffee for those who want the fullness of a classic espresso, but with a fruity and juicy twist of citrus that elevates the whole experience.
