In the world of specialty coffee, there are beans that truly stand out – both in taste and form. One of them is La Picona from northern Nicaragua — a coffee that not only impresses visually with its large beans, but also with its flavor profile and balance.

La Picona is located in the community of Las Manos in Dipilto in the Nueva Segovia region — an area known for its high altitude, cool nights, and ideal conditions for quality coffee.
The farm is owned by Martha Lucía Albir Sotomayor, an experienced specialty coffee producer, who has built up La Picona along with her other farms and her co-ownership of the Cafetos de Segovia drying facility.
It is an example of how the combination of knowledge, terroir and passion produces coffee with both personality and complexity.
What makes La Picona particularly famous is its Maracaturra — a cross between Maragogipe and Caturra — which produces exceptionally large coffee beans .
But size isn't everything:
👉 It is also the coffee's flavor profile that makes it unique, which you can experience here:

Maracaturra contributes both body and complexity to the cup, while also making room for fruitiness, sweetness and elegance.
The coffee at La Picona grows under a shady canopy of native trees, banana plants and fruit trees, creating a microclimate that favors slower ripening and a more nuanced expression in the cup. The farm works with:
integrated pest management methods
organic nutrition
minimal chemical use
This is about both quality and long-term cultivation — something that is definitely reflected in the taste and stability of each batch.
The ripe coffee berries are hand-picked and processed as natural , which means that the berries are dried whole. This gives:
deep fruitiness
rich sweetness
silky mouthfeel
The Natural process allows the sugar from the pulp to influence the bean more, making the profile both generous and complex.
In the cup, La Picona gives you:
Cherries – juicy and distinct fruitiness
Plum jam – deep, round sweetness
Dark cocoa – structure and fullness
Caramel & golden raisins – long, elegant finish
It's a coffee with character, yet well-balanced — a clear example of how naturally processed coffees can be so expressive and sophisticated.
