Make Your Own Cold Brew at Home – Simple Step-by-Step Guide | Hälla Coffee Roastery

How to Brew Perfect Cold Brew at Home – Simple Step-by-Step Guide

When summer is creeping up (or when you simply want a really smooth coffee experience), there are few things that beat a refreshing Cold Brew . Unlike regular coffee drinks that are brewed with hot water and then cooled, cold brew coffee is brewed with cold water over a long period of time.

The result? A wonderfully smooth, naturally sweet and round coffee taste with significantly lower acidity and bitterness. And best of all, it's incredibly easy to prepare at home!

Here at Hälla Kafferosteri we go through how to succeed with your Cold Brew step by step.

This is what you need:

  • Coarsely ground coffee: Freshly roasted coffee beans ground coarsely (as for press/boiler coffee).

  • Cold water: Preferably filtered or really fresh, cold tap water.

  • A container: A juicer, a large glass jug, or a regular juicer.

  • Filter: Coffee filter, strainer or press filter.

  • Proportions: A good guideline is 1 part coffee to 8 parts water (e.g. 12.5 g coffee to 1 dl water) for a ready-to-drink coffee.

How to make Cold Brew – 3 easy steps

Step 1: Mix coarsely ground coffee and cold water

Measure out your coarsely ground coffee and pour it into your container. Pour over the cold water and stir gently with a spoon so that all the coffee powder is thoroughly moistened.

Tip: Grinding is key! Grind the coffee coarsely – if it is ground too finely, the coffee will be cloudy and may have a bitter taste.

Step 2: Let it sit in the refrigerator (12–24 hours)

Cover the container (with a lid or some plastic wrap) and place it in the refrigerator. Now time does the work! Let the coffee steep for at least 12 hours, but preferably up to 18–24 hours for maximum flavor extraction.

Step 3: Strain and serve over ice

Once the time has passed, it is time to separate the coffee grounds from the drink. If you are using a press jug, simply press down the mesh slowly. If you are using a regular jug, pour the coffee through a paper filter or a strainer.

Fill a glass with lots of ice, pour your fresh Cold Brew and enjoy!

3 Quick Tips for the Ultimate Cold Brew Experience

  1. Choose beans with character: Since the cold brew method highlights the coffee's natural sweetness, beans with chocolatey, nutty or fruity notes are perfect. We recommend using our coffee Lagom for Cold Brew, you can find Lagom here: https://hallakafferosteri.com/kaffe/mellanrostat-kaffe/lagom

  2. Serve with a splash of milk: Cold Brew has a naturally full body that pairs wonderfully with a little creamy milk.

  3. Shelf life: Your ready-brewed Cold Brew will stay fresh in a closed glass bottle in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Brew a larger batch on Sunday and you'll have luxurious coffee ready all week long!
