The craftsmanship behind the Gatomboya Coffee Washing Station

Named after the local village in Nyeri, Gatomboya is owned by the cooperative to which the farmers themselves belong. Here, most farmers cultivate small plots of about one hectare with around 400 coffee bushes, planted side by side with food crops.

What makes Gatomboya so exceptional is the extremely strict and quality-driven refining process:

  1. Careful handpicking: Only the most perfect, deep red and fully ripe coffee berries are received at the washing station.

  2. Controlled fermentation: After the berries are peeled, they ferment in tanks for 16–20 hours to develop their complex flavors.

  3. Traditional washing: The coffee is thoroughly washed in running water channels to remove all traces of pulp.

  4. Slow drying on African beds: Parchment coffee is slowly dried on raised beds for 12–20 days. During the hottest hours of the sun, the beans are covered with shade nets to dry as gently and evenly as possible.

A nice touch for the local community: The cooperative roasts and grinds the lower grades of coffee under its own local brand , Barichu Coffee House . This promotes a strong coffee drinking culture among the farmers themselves, creates extra income and allows the farmers to have close contact with the product they put their whole heart into growing!

The legendary varieties: SL28 & SL34

The secret behind the iconic flavor profile from Kenya lies in the unique coffee varieties. Gatomboya consists of a magical combination of the country's most treasured coffee varieties:

  • SL28: Originally selected in the 1930s, the bean is renowned for its incredible drought tolerance and its complex, sweet profile with deep, wine-like undertones.

  • SL34: Another historic selection admired for its full body, rich aroma and balanced acidity.

Together with the volcanic soil and the extremely high cultivation altitude of 1,800 meters above sea level, a coffee with an incomparable richness of flavor is created.

Flavor Profile & Coffee Facts: What does Gatomboya taste like?

As a light roasted coffee, we preserve all the fantastic, natural, original flavors in the bean.

The cup stands out with its classic, intensely berry notes of blackcurrant , accompanied by a tight and fine acidity that brings to mind fresh grapefruit . What makes the cup completely complete is the outstanding heavy sweetness and the extreme purity of the aftertaste.

How do you best brew Gatomboya?

A complex and fruity light roast coffee like this does best in manual filter brewers that emphasize purity:

  • V60 / Kalita Wave: Perfect for getting carried away by the juicy acidity of grapefruit and the sweet notes of blackcurrant.

  • Chemex: Produces an incredibly clear and tea-like cup where the sweetness really shines through.

  • Pressed coffee (Light roast recipe): Let the coffee steep a little longer to bring out that wonderful heavy sweetness.

Treat yourself to a world-class Kenyan coffee experience!

A Kenyan coffee with 87 points doesn't come along every day. Don't miss the chance to experience Gatomboya – the coffee that turns your morning cup into a moment of pure indulgence.
