When you think of China, you probably think of tea. And rightly so – tea has been a backbone of Chinese culture for thousands of years. But in recent years, a quiet (or rather, very loud and fast) revolution has taken place. China has transformed itself in record time into one of the world’s most exciting and innovative markets for specialty coffee .
From the mist-shrouded mountains of southern China to the hypermodern coffee shops of Shanghai – here’s the story of how China became the new superpower of the coffee world, and why you should keep an eye out for coffee beans from Yunnan.

The heart of Chinese coffee production beats in Yunnan , a province in southwestern China bordering Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar. Geographically, the region is perfectly positioned in the so-called "coffee belt". With its high altitudes (often between 1,200 and 1,800 meters above sea level), nutrient-rich soils and mild climate, Yunnan has proven to have optimal conditions for growing the highest quality Arabica coffee.
For a long time, Yunnan was the place where most commercial coffee was grown, but in the last decade a new generation of coffee farmers has taken over. With a strong focus on microlots, sustainability and experimental processing methods – such as anaerobic fermentation and yeast infusions – they have raised the quality to international top levels.
Because Yunnan coffee producers are extremely innovative, flavors vary, but generally, a washed Yunnan coffee is characterized by:
If Yunnan is the birthplace of coffee in China, then Shanghai is its absolute temple. Did you know that Shanghai is the city in the world with the most coffee shops ? The city has surpassed Tokyo, London and New York with over 8,000 coffee shops.
But it's not just about quantity – it's about extremely high quality and creativity. In Shanghai, you'll find world-class coffee shops where baristas experiment with signature drinks that blend espresso with everything from osmanthus flowers and traditional Chinese liquor (Baijiu) to fermented milk. The Chinese "Generation Z" sees coffee not just as a caffeine boost, but as a lifestyle, a craft and a form of self-expression.
China's coffee scene is unique in that it has grown digitally. Orders are made almost exclusively through apps, and social media trends (on platforms like WeChat and Xiaohongshu) are transforming coffee menus overnight.
This fast-paced culture has also spilled over into the roasteries. Chinese roasters are now known for buying up some of the world’s most expensive and rarest coffee lots (like the exclusive Geisha from Panama) and their roasting techniques are incredibly precise. China is no longer just a consumer of coffee culture – they are co-creating it.
Here at At Hälla Kafferosteri we love to explore hidden coffee treasures and share them with you. The fact that the Asian coffee scene, led by China, is growing like crazy means that in the future we will see even more unique flavors, processes and beans that challenge the traditional image of how coffee "should" taste.
